In Queensland, some people are exempt from needing a standard Blue Card (the state's Working With Children Check) because of another role they already hold. Registered teachers and police officers are the most common examples — their existing registration already covers them for child-related work.

A Blue Card Exemption records that exemption against the worker, so the requirement is met without them also holding a separate Blue Card.

Who needs it​

Workers in Queensland who are exempt from holding a standard Blue Card — typically registered teachers and police officers.

Worth being precise about what an exemption does: it satisfies the Blue Card requirement, it doesn't remove it. An exempt worker still needs the registration the exemption rests on — and that registration is itself a credential Oho can verify and monitor. A teacher whose registration lapses no longer has grounds for the exemption.

What Oho needs​

The exemption card number with its issue number, the holder's full name, and the card's expiry date. Blue Card Services checks all three together, so an exemption with no expiry date on record can't be confirmed.

What a valid exemption card number looks like

1234567/1 — the card number, a forward slash, then the issue number. Both parts are digits. Spaces are ignored, but the slash isn't optional: without it Oho can't tell the card number from the issue number.

Unlike a standard Blue Card, the exemption needs the holder's full name rather than just a surname.

Before you start​

Nothing to configure — Blue Card Services publishes exemption cards on a public validation page, so there's no login to provide.

Do put the underlying registration on the worker's record, though. The exemption is only as good as the role it rests on, and holding both means Oho can tell you when that role's registration changes.

How Oho verifies it​

Oho checks the exemption card against Blue Card Services' exemption-card validation page in real time, and returns a result in well under a minute. It's the same check Oho runs on a standard Blue Card, against a separate page that Blue Card Services publishes for exemption cards.

Once verified, the exemption sits on the worker's profile alongside their other credentials, counts towards their compliance, and is re-checked on the schedule you set in the Verification Sources tab.

Renewals & monitoring​

Two things need watching, and they fail in different ways.

The exemption card itself. As with a standard Blue Card, a reissued exemption card carries a new issue number, and Oho has no way to guess it — so a renewed card must be re-recorded rather than picked up on its own. Until it is, the old issue number stops validating.

The role the exemption rests on. This is the one that catches people out: the exemption can look settled while the registration underneath it has lapsed. Keep the underlying teacher registration or police credential on the worker's record and let Oho monitor that, so a lapse shows up as a problem on the credential and gives you a reason to revisit the exemption — instead of the exemption quietly standing on nothing.
